Web Awareness

Precautions a Parent Should Take

  • Parents & Guardians - You are responsible for your child's welfare and should take steps to educate you and your child about the positive and negative aspects of the Internet.

  • Reduce Potential Problems - Talk with your child and go online together. Notice if a child is online excessively; it may become a problem. Spend some time going online by yourself to become aware of what's "out there," especially sites your child frequents. Parental guidance is a must.

  • You Set the Rules - You're in charge, so take charge! Consider limiting Internet usage to a certain time (especially if your computer is tying up your telephone line so no one can reach you). Discuss the "do's and don'ts" of the Internet, including topics such as how to deal with adult-oriented information when it's encountered, or not meeting people met online without your approval.

  • Make it Positive and Fun! - Remember, the Internet is full of great stuff. Make going online a family experience, and start out with sites you know you can trust, like the library's website (www.thrall.org).
