Now Read the Book!

June 14, 2011

We expanded our library catalog video browser to include titles of books made into movies.

From literary classics (such as the novels of Jane Austen) to modern adaptations of contemporary works of fiction (such as Atonement or The Time Traveler's Wife), there are many titles you can quickly locate or request in the library catalog.

Book titles are arranged in two sections: For the Entire Family and For Adult Audiences. Some books have more than one edition, and audio books may be available as well.

We also have a printed Movies Inspired by Books flyer available in print at the library as well as a downloadble edition at our website (in Adobe Reader PDF format).

Our online video browser now also features titles of notable New Releases starting with January 2011. You can easily and instantly check on (and try to reserve) these or other titles listed in our video browser within a couple of clicks!

Best Films of 2010
+ 2011 Preview

December 31, 2010

What were the best movies of 2010? That depends on who you ask. There are the "summer blockbusters" and "top-grossing" films which, for whatever reason, fared better, financially speaking, than the other films, but movie critics' picks rarely coincide with ticket sales.

To help us focus on some of the finer films of 2010, several lists are available online:
Many of these movies are already on DVD, so you might want to search the library catalog for videos that interest you. You can also use our video browser to catch up on some great movies you might have missed.

What about 2011? What movies can you look forward to seeing? Check out these lists, some of which also include early movie poster previews, video clips, trailers:
Here are Middletown Thrall Library's schedules for our 2011 film series:

Summer 2010 Selections

Time to put together a list of thrillers! Some new films, some old. Most of them making for high-anxiety film watching! "And now, my beauties," as the Wicked Witch of the West said, "something with poison in it, I think. . ."

Classic Thrillers, French

Recent Thrillers

Thrillers with Cult Followings

Classic American Thrillers

Documentary Thrillers to Put You
on the Edge of Your Seat

A Smash Hit Romantic Comedy. With Zombies.

Note: If you'd like to learn more about the genre, style, mood of "film noir," Thrall Library has a documentary entitled "Film Noir: Bringing Darkness to Light." It presents a variety of thoughts and opinions on these dark, shadowy films mainly produced by Hollywood from 1945 through 1958 and reflective of the hard times following WW II. These were the "B" movies. Lots of good and bad film clips and lots of Robert Mitchum, dangerous women, trench coats, and down-on-their-luck detectives. (DVD 791.4365 FIL)

A Dozen or So Documentary Films for Your Consideration

Documentaries are non-fiction films and can be about anything. Tell us what you need and we'll try to help you locate it. Thrall's documentaries can be found at the "news stand" following the fiction DVD browsers and also with the VHS tapes, in both cases cataloged with Dewey Decimal numbers to identify their subject content.

Here's a suggestion. The next time you come in looking for a popular entertainment DVD, pause and pick out a documentary to take home as well. Documentaries are often shorter than feature films. They can tell you important things about the world, everyday life, health and well-being, food, exercise, the environment, and more. They can be serious and/or funny. They can actually be great musical performances on DVD, hiding out among the other DVDs. Do yourself a favor: give "docs" a try!

Our first suggestion is...

A tasty sampling of cookery DVDs in the Thrall collection: These last two "CookingOnDVD" presentations are part of a project that takes viewers around the world and into all kinds of kitchens with cooks preparing recipes in their native countries. With English narration, one has the oppportunity to look "over the shoulder" of the individual cooks to see exactly what they're doing. No snappy kitchen patter here. Lots of views of real cooks working in their own kitchens around the world. Interesting!
