The Residence Inside the Private World of the White House

by Kate Andersen Brower

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "From the mystique of the glamorous Kennedys to the tumult that surrounded Bill and Hillary Clinton during the president's impeachment to the historic tenure of Barack and Michelle Obama, each new administration brings a unique set of personalities to the White House-and a new set of challenges to the fiercely loyal and hardworking people who serve them: the White House residence staff. In her runaway bestseller The Residence, former White House correspondent Kate Andersen Brower pulls back the curtain on the world's most famous address. Drawing on hundreds of hours of interviews with butlers, maids, chefs, florists, doormen, and other staffers-as well as conversations with three former first ladies and the children of four presidents - Brower offers a group portrait of the dedicated professionals who orchestrate lavish state dinners; stand ready during meetings with foreign dignitaries; care for the president and First Lady's young children; and cater to every need the first couple may have, however sublime or, on occasion, ridiculous."

The Radium Girls: The Dark Story
of America's Shining Women

by Kate Moore

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Sept. 26, 2018, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "As World War I raged across the globe, hundreds of young women toiled away at the radium-dial factories, where they painted clock faces with a mysterious new substance called radium. Assured by their bosses that the luminous material was safe, the women themselves shone brightly in the dark, covered from head to toe with the glowing dust. With such a coveted job, these "shining girls" were considered the luckiest alive--until they began to fall mysteriously ill. As the fatal poison of the radium took hold, they found themselves embroiled in one of America's biggest scandals and a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights. The Radium Girls explores the strength of extraordinary women in the face of almost impossible circumstances and the astonishing legacy they left behind."

June 30, 2018, 12:30 PM

in the 2nd floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library

"During our time together we will examine the human experience. The human experience is narrated by our own personal conglomerate of ideas, judgments and beliefs. This narration provides us with a sense of identity that is intimately tied to our internal pain and life struggle. By shedding light on this human condition and our identification with it we will chip away at the stone of perception to reveal the sculpture underneath. This is an invitation to explore Truth beyond the relative. To maintain the integrity of the space, I will lead with a talk and then open the floor for questions and discussion. I look forward to meeting you all." - David

The Plot Against America

by Philip Roth

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tuesday, June 26, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "When the renowned aviation hero and rabid isolationist Charles A. Lindbergh defeated Franklin Roosevelt by a landslide in the 1940 presidential election, fear invaded every Jewish household in America. Not only had Lindbergh, in a nationwide radio address, publicly blamed the Jews for selfishly pushing America toward a pointless war with Nazi Germany, but upon taking office as the thirty-third president of the United States, he negotiated a cordial 'understanding' with Adolf Hitler, whose conquest of Europe and virulent anti-Semitic policies he appeared to accept without difficulty. What then followed in America is the historical setting for this startling new book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Philip Roth, who recounts what it was like for his Newark family - and for a million such families all over the country - during the menacing years of the Lindbergh presidency, when American citizens who happened to be Jews had every reason to expect the worst."

The Lost City of the
Monkey God: A True Story

by Douglas Preston

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

May 30, 2018, 3 PM (rescheduled)

NEW DATE: Monday, June 4, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "A five-hundred-year-old legend. An ancient curse. A stunning medical mystery. And a pioneering journey into the unknown heart of the world's densest jungle. Since the days of conquistador Hernan Cortes, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artifacts and an electrifying story of having found the Lost City of the Monkey God - but then committed suicide without revealing its location. Three quarters of a century later, bestselling author Doug Preston joined a team of scientists on a groundbreaking new quest. In 2012 he climbed aboard a rickety, single-engine plane carrying the machine that would change everything: lidar, a highly advanced, classified technology that could map the terrain under the densest rainforest canopy. In an unexplored valley ringed by steep mountains, that flight revealed the unmistakable image of a sprawling metropolis, tantalizing evidence of not just an undiscovered city but an enigmatic, lost civilization. Venturing into this raw, treacherous, but breathtakingly beautiful wilderness to confirm the discovery, Preston and the team battled torrential rains, quickmud, disease-carrying insects, jaguars, and deadly snakes. But it wasn't until they returned that tragedy struck: Preston and others found they had contracted in the ruins a horrifying, sometimes lethal-and incurable-disease. Suspenseful and shocking, filled with colorful history, hair-raising adventure, and dramatic twists of fortune, The Lost City of the Monkey God is the absolutely true, eyewitness account of one of the great discoveries of the twenty-first century."

All throughout my life I have been improvising music on the piano. My mind takes little pictures and images of things I've made up. These stills are then played back in all different orders in a single performance in motion pictures. I go with my best images of what I want to play, and I use my heart to regroup them. I started playing Billy Joel's finest songs at age 9. Later, I heard The Kohn Concert by Keith Jarrett at age 12 and began improvising. Musicians I like include Jim Croce, James Tayler, Billy and Elton, The Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Miles Davis, Stravinsky, Eric Satie, Frank Zappa, also close friends' music, the music of Mike Ciliberto, Mark Davenport, Brad Scribner, and all the other songwriters and performers in the Hudson Valley. In past performances, I played three years at 88 Charles Street, Montgomery, NY (2006-2009), two years at Christie's Restaurant in Westtown, NY (1992,1993), Copley Plaza in Boston, and elsewhere. I was the Music Director for David Cohen's Theatre Improvisation troupe (1994) and the Music Director for Martin Moss (1983). I have composed many original songs, many versions of those songs, and have recorded three albums: Walking through Portraits, Turn the Music On, and FREE, all privately funded. I also enjoy exploring visual media. My art is surrealistic impressionism. I am a Colorist. My favorite artists include Picasso, Matisse (love cutouts) Pollack, and Basquiat." Charlie is currently working on a new album to be released later in 2018.

This event is FREE and open to the public.

You can listen to a select portion of Charlie's recent music at www.soundcloud.com/chazlang.

The Stranger in the Woods

The Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit

by Michael Finkel

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

March 28, 2018, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "For readers of Jon Krakauer and The Lost City of Z, a remarkable tale of survival and solitude - the true story of a man who lived alone in a tent in the Maine woods, never talking to another person and surviving by stealing supplies from nearby cabins for twenty-seven years. In 1986, twenty-year-old Christopher Knight left his home in Massachusetts, drove to Maine, and disappeared into the woods. He would not have a conversation with another human being until nearly three decades later when he was arrested for stealing food. Living in a tent even in winter, he had survived by his wits and courage, developing ingenious ways to store food and water, to avoid freezing to death. He broke into nearby cottages for food, clothes, reading material, and other provisions, taking only what he needed, but terrifying a community never able to solve the mysterious burglaries. Based on extensive interviews with Knight himself, this is a vividly detailed account of the why and how of his secluded life--as well as the challenges he has faced returning to the world. A riveting story of survival that asks fundamental questions about solitude, community, and what makes a good life, and a deeply moving portrait of a man who was determined to live his own way, and succeeded."

Truly Madly Guilty

by Liane Moriarty

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

Tue., Feb. 27, 2018, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One small dog. It's just a normal weekend. What could possibly go wrong? In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty turns her unique, razor-sharp eye towards three seemingly happy families. Sam and Clementine have a wonderful, albeit, busy life: they have two little girls, Sam has just started a new dream job and Clementine, a cellist, is busy preparing for the audition of a lifetime. If there's anything they can count on, it's each other. Clementine and Erika are each other's oldest friends. A single look between them can convey an entire conversation. But theirs is a complicated relationship, so when Erika mentions a last minute invitation to a barbecue with her neighbors, Tiffany and Vid, Clementine and Sam don't hesitate. Having Tiffany and Vid's larger than life personalities there will be a welcome respite. Two months later, it won't stop raining, and Clementine and Sam can't stop asking themselves the question: What if we hadn't gone? In Truly Madly Guilty, Liane Moriarty takes on the foundations our lives: marriage, sex, parenthood, and friendship. She shows how guilt can expose the fault lines in the most seemingly strong relationships, how what we don't say can be more powerful than what we do, and how sometimes it is the most innocent of moments that can do the greatest harm."

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "When an intricate old map is found stuffed into the walls of the bistro in Three Pines, it at first seems no more than a curiosity. But the closer the villagers look, the stranger it becomes. Given to Armand Gamache as a gift the first day of his new job, the map eventually leads him to shattering secrets. To an old friend and older adversary. It leads the former Chief of Homicide for the Surete du Quebec to places even he is afraid to go. But must. And there he finds four young cadets in the Surete academy, and a dead professor. And, with the body, a copy of the old, odd map."
