Books on Tap

Nov. 17, 2019, 1 - 3 PM

at Scotchtown Craft Bar & Kitchen
741 Route 211 East, Suite 6, Middletown, New York

Come join us in our discussion of Becoming, former First Lady Michelle Obama's inspiring memoir.

From the publisher: "In a life filled with meaning and accomplishment, Michelle Obama has emerged as one of the most iconic and compelling women of our era. As First Lady of the United States of America-the first African American to serve in that role-she helped create the most welcoming and inclusive White House in history, while also establishing herself as a powerful advocate for women and girls in the U.S. and around the world, dramatically changing the ways that families pursue healthier and more active lives, and standing with her husband as he led America through some of its most harrowing moments. Along the way, she showed us a few dance moves, crushed Carpool Karaoke, and raised two down-to-earth daughters under an unforgiving media glare. In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites readers into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her-from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work, to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it-in her own words and on her own terms. Warm, wise, and revelatory, Becoming is the deeply personal reckoning of a woman of soul and substance who has steadily defied expectations-and whose story inspires us to do the same."

Our Popular & Entertaining Monthly Book Discussion

Dec. 4, 2019, 3 PM

At our next talk, we will discuss I'll Be Gone in the Dark by Michelle McNamara:

About the book (from the publisher's description): "I'll Be Gone in the Dark - the masterpiece McNamara was writing at the time of her sudden death - offers an atmospheric snapshot of a moment in American history and a chilling account of a criminal mastermind and the wreckage he left behind. It is also a portrait of a woman's obsession and her unflagging pursuit of the truth. Utterly original and compelling, it has been hailed as a modern true crime classic - one which fulfilled Michelle's dream: helping unmask the Golden State Killer."

October 20, 2019, 1 - 3 PM

at Clemson Brewing Company
22 Cottage St., Middletown, NY 10940

How could we not pick something in the horror genre for October's book discussion???

This month, we're reading a novel by the "king" of horror himself: Stephen King's The Outsider.

About the Book (from the publisher's description): "An eleven-year-old boy's violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City's most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad. As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King's propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can."

Our Popular & Entertaining Monthly Book Discussion

Sept. 24, 2019, 3 PM

in our 2nd floor Community Room at Thrall

At our next talk, we will discuss Beartown by Fredrik Bachman:

About the book (from the publisher's description): "From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove, My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry, and Britt-Marie Was Here, comes a poignant, charming novel about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything. Winning a junior ice hockey championship might not mean a lot to the average person, but it means everything to the residents of Beartown, a community slowly being eaten alive by unemployment and the surrounding wilderness. A victory like this would draw national attention to the ailing town: it could attract government funding and an influx of talented athletes who would choose Beartown over the big nearby cities. A victory like this would certainly mean everything to Amat, a short, scrawny teenager who is treated like an outcast everywhere but on the ice; to Kevin, a star player just on the cusp of securing his golden future in the NHL; and to Peter, their dedicated general manager whose own professional hockey career ended in tragedy. At first, it seems like the team might have a shot at fulfilling the dreams of their entire town. But one night at a drunken celebration following a key win, something happens between Kevin and the general manager's daughter - and the next day everything seems to have changed."

Copies of this book are available for borrowing or reservation at the library.

Book Discussion

August 25, 2019, 1 - 3 PM

We're meeting @ Tapped
22 Henry Street, Middletown, NY

This August, we're delving into the mystery genre with Ruth Ware's The Woman in Cabin 10.

About the book: "In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie's works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo's stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for-and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo's desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong.... With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10 - one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned."

Registration not required, but encouraged! Copies of this book (regular, Large Print, audio) are available for check out at Circulation.

Come join us for our second "Books on Tap" Book Discussion at Clemson Brewing Company! We're taking the discussion out of the library and into the community. So come sit, grab a beer, have some snacks, and discuss this month's book: About the book (from the publisher's description): "Grunt tackles the science behind some of a soldier's most challenging adversaries - panic, exhaustion, heat, flies, noise - and introduces us to the scientists who seek to conquer them. Roach visits a repurposed movie studio where amputee actors help prepare Marine Corps medics for the shock and gore of combat wounds. At Camp Lemmonier, Djibouti, in east Africa, she discovers that diarrhea can be a threat to national security. Back in the US, fashion designers at U.S. Army Natick Labs explain why a zipper is a problem for a sniper. Roach samples caffeinated meat, sniffs an archival sample of a World War II stink bomb, and stays up all night with the crew tending the missiles on the nuclear submarine USS Tennessee. She answers questions not found in any other book on the military: Why is DARPA interested in ducks? How is a wedding gown like a bomb suit? Why are shrimp more dangerous to sailors than sharks? Take a tour of duty with Roach, and you'll never see our nation's defenders in the same way again."

Sunday, June 9, 2019, 1 - 2:30 PM

Come join us for our very first "Books on Tap" Book Discussion at Equilibrium Brewery! We're taking the discussion out of the library and into the community. So come sit, grab a beer, have some snacks, and discuss this month's book: About the book (from the publisher's description): "One of the most important and blazingly original writers of his generation, George Saunders is an undisputed master of the short story, and Tenth of December is his most honest, accessible, and moving collection yet. Writing brilliantly and profoundly about class, sex, love, loss, work, despair, and war, Saunders cuts to the core of the contemporary experience. These stories take on the big questions and explore the fault lines of our own morality, delving into the questions of what makes us good and what makes us human. Unsettling, insightful, and hilarious, the stories in Tenth of December - through their manic energy, their focus on what is redeemable in human beings, and their generosity of spirit - not only entertain and delight; they fulfill Chekhov's dictum that art should 'prepare us for tenderness.'"

Glass Houses

by Louise Penny

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

May 29, 2019, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "When a mysterious figure appears in Three Pines one cold November day, Armand Gamache and the rest of the villagers are at first curious. Then wary. Through rain and sleet, the figure stands unmoving, staring ahead. From the moment its shadow falls over the village, Gamache, now Chief Superintendent of the Surete du Quebec, suspects the creature has deep roots and a dark purpose. Yet he does nothing. What can he do? Only watch and wait. And hope his mounting fears are not realized. But when the figure vanishes overnight and a body is discovered, it falls to Gamache to discover if a debt has been paid or levied. Months later, on a steamy July day as the trial for the accused begins in Montreal, Chief Superintendent Gamache continues to struggle with actions he set in motion that bitter November, from which there is no going back. More than the accused is on trial. Gamache's own conscience is standing in judgment."

From the artist: "Painting with watercolors is a pleasure I love to share. The flow of color and the luminosity of the paint make it an exciting medium. It's fun and easier than people think. I have enjoyed the continuous learning process that making art offers me. Landscapes, still-lives, and portraits have been my subjects. Sharing my vision of the world, especially nature, with people gives me great joy. As a child I was introduced to art by my father, a professional artist. I have been involved with art all through my life, creating fabric art, teaching water color techniques, and drawing and painting on my own. I professionally designed and created fabric wall hangings and clothing for 17 years and now I paint using water colors, oils and acrylics."

Tales of Feline Friendships in Old New York

A Book Presentation & Signing with Author Peggy Gavan

June 11, 2019, 6:30 - 7:30 PM

in the 2nd Floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library

From the Author: "We've all heard of the 'crazy cat lady,' but what about the 'crazy cat man'? In the 1800s and early 1900s, when most New York City residents dealt with the feline overpopulation by gassing stray cats or tossing them into rivers and street gutters, many brawny men - including sailors, firemen, cops, politicians, and athletes - welcomed alley cats into their homes and hearts with open arms."

Warwick, New York author Peggy Gavan will wind the audience through the streets of Old New York and Brooklyn as she tells amazing stories of these heroic cat men of Gotham and the alley cats they rescued and came to love. Hear about a spectacled cat that saved Brooklyn Borough Hall, the feline mascot of America's first theatrical club, the New York City Post Office feline police force, and more amazing tales. Fun for cat lovers and history fans alike!

Copies of the author's book will be available for purchase ($20, cash only).

This event is free and open to the public.

Questions? Please contact Theresa Zacek at tzacek@rcls.org or 341-5483.

About the Author: "Peggy Gavan is a journalist, senior editor, volunteer firefighter, and New Yorker with a passion for cats and New York City history. Ever since she started writing her blog, The Hatching Cat: True and Unusual Animal Tales of Old New York (www.hatchingcatnyc.com), she has been on a never-ending quest to explore the history of New York City through animal tales from the 1800s to World War II. Many of these tales are amazing, some are curiously odd, and others fall under the file called "You just can't make this stuff up." Her favorite stories, though, are the ones that make people say, 'Wow, who knew!?' Peggy lives in Warwick with her husband, Joe, and their two rescue cats, Misha and Boo."

The action switches between the J. Edgar Hoover era and Professor Sam Teagarden's decoding of the mystery file in 2019, in the midst of the 50th anniversary of the iconic Woodstock Festival. As the professor runs for his life, armed only with his wits and intellect, he worries whether truth will win the day. Or worse, will he end up dead?"

Questions? Please contact Theresa Zacek at tzacek@rcls.org or 341-5483.

The Good Neighbor: The Life and Works of Fred Rodgers

by Maxwell King

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

April 30, 2019, 3 PM

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "Fred Rogers (1928-2003) was an enormously influential figure in the history of television and in the lives of tens of millions of children. As the creator and star of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood he was a champion of compassion, equality, and kindness. Rogers was fiercely devoted to children and to taking their fears, concerns, and questions about the world seriously. The Good Neighbor, the first full-length biography of Fred Rogers, tells the story of this utterly unique and enduring American icon. Drawing on original interviews, oral histories, and archival documents, Maxwell King traces Rogers's personal, professional, and artistic life through decades of work, including a surprising decision to walk away from the show to make television for adults, only to return to the neighborhood with increasingly sophisticated episodes, written in collaboration with experts on childhood development. An engaging story, rich in detail, The Good Neighbor is the definitive portrait of a beloved figure, cherished by multiple generations."

Killers of the Flower Moon

by David Grann

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

March 26, 2019

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "From New Yorker staff writer David Grann, #1 New York Times best-selling author of The Lost City of Z, a twisting, haunting true-life murder mystery about one of the most monstrous crimes in American history In the 1920s, the richest people per capita in the world were members of the Osage Indian nation in Oklahoma. After oil was discovered beneath their land, they rode in chauffeured automobiles, built mansions, and sent their children to study in Europe. Then, one by one, the Osage began to be killed off. The family of an Osage woman, Mollie Burkhart, became a prime target. Her relatives were shot and poisoned. And it was just the beginning, as more and more members of the tribe began to die under mysterious circumstances. In this last remnant of the Wild West - where oilmen like J. P. Getty made their fortunes and where desperadoes like Al Spencer, the 'Phantom Terror,'roamed - many of those who dared to investigate the killings were themselves murdered. As the death toll climbed to more than twenty-four, the FBI took up the case. It was one of the organization's first major homicide investigations...."

in our 2nd floor Community Room at Middletown Thrall Library

"Sankofa meaning going back to the roots in the Twi language from Ghana...

West Africa is very symbolic in promoting personal and community awareness of the positive role of the arts in the villages in West Africa demonstrated through our rich cultural values passed on to us by our great ancestors Nananom.

This group was originally formed in the summer of 1997 from my community drum circles in Allentown and Stroudsburg, PA. This group teaches togetherness in diversity and empowerment of the individual self-image as well as the community building / teamwork through African drumming and dance."

This event is free and open to the public!

A Book Discussion with Matt Pfisterer

January 30, 2019, 3 PM

* New date: February 7, 2019

at Middletown Thrall Library, in our 2nd floor Community Room.

About the book (from the publisher's description): "In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned - from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community."
