Books on Tap Book Discussion

Sunday, October 24, 2021, 2 PM

at

Brown Barn Farms

Books on Tap is BACK... IN PERSON!

Of COURSE we're going to pick something a little scary for October. This month's book is Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam.

Books and eBooks are available for borrowing through our library.

From the publisher: "Amanda and Clay head out to a remote corner of Long Island expecting a vacation: a quiet reprieve from life in New York City, quality time with their teenage son and daughter, and a taste of the good life in the luxurious home they've rented for the week. But a late-night knock on the door breaks the spell. Ruth and G. H. are an older couple-it's their house, and they've arrived in a panic. They bring the news that a sudden blackout has swept the city. But in this rural area--with the TV and internet now down, and no cell phone service--it's hard to know what to believe. Should Amanda and Clay trust this couple--and vice versa? What happened back in New York? Is the vacation home, isolated from civilization, a truly safe place for their families? And are they safe from one another?"

Books and eBooks are available for borrowing through our library.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

We are meeting at Orange County Distillery at Brown Barn Farms located at 286 Maple Avenue, New Hampton, NY.

2021 Role-Play Gaming
Fall Institute for Adults

Presented by Jared Fishman & HMGS Next Gen, Inc.

Starting Tuesday, September 28, 2021, 6 - 8 pm

Imagine a world that takes place only at night, where horror, mystery, and fantasy meet at a crossroads only the imagination can create. We've all heard sayings like "things that go bump in the night" and proverbs like "when the night's darkest, dawn's nearest"- in the World of Darkness, the infamous setting of all White Wolf games, these statements are more true than you think!

Now let's take things a step further- imagine you are playing a character in this world, in which your decisions will either prove fruitful, or quite costly for your unlife!

If this sounds exciting to you, sign up for this fall's Role-play Gaming Institute, coordinated by the Middletown Thrall Library, storyteller Jared Fishman, and HMGS Next Gen Gaming, Inc. This is a 7 week, virtual program beginning Tuesday, September 28th and ending Tuesday, November 9th.

The game/course is designed for adults 21+, and will cater to all play abilities from beginner to advanced. Each session will read like a story, with players taking an active part in building the narrative through their decisions, ideas, and other thoughts.

Players will become immersed in the setting, conflict, and general plot, and will see the ramifications of their actions in an immediate way. Whether you've played White Wolf games before or not, this will be an exciting experience for all!

**While the initial Zoom seminar is available to an unlimited number of participants, the campaign itself has a 4-6 player max**

To register, please contact Theresa Zacek at 845-341-5483 or tzacek@rcls.org.

"This campaign will be run by Jared Fishman, teacher and game based learning specialist with over 20+ years of experience in the field. He has run workshops, seminars, and conferences for NYSAIS (New York State Association of Independent Schools), NASAGA (North American Simulation and Games Association), and libraries including Ellenville, Valley Cottage, Gardiner, Middletown Thrall, and Greenburgh. Programming has ranged from game based learning and design for the classroom, workplace, and other capacities. Much of this work has been done through the lens of his non-profit organization, HMGS Next Gen, Inc, which is devoted to fostering and growing game clubs and game-based learning across the tri-state area and beyond. In the case of this WoD campaign, players will engage in a setting that's existed since 2001, and has had dozens of players rotating in and out over that time. He is very, very excited to share this world with interested players."

Clemson Brewery

Books on Tap is BACK... IN PERSON!

We will be discussing Lab Girl by Hope Jahren.

Books and eBooks are available for borrowing through our library.

From the publisher: "Geobiologist Hope Jahren has spent her life studying trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Lab Girl is her revelatory treatise on plant life-but it is also a celebration of the lifelong curiosity, humility, and passion that drive every scientist. In these pages, Hope takes us back to her Minnesota childhood, where she spent hours in unfettered play in her father's college laboratory. She tells us how she found a sanctuary in science, learning to perform lab work "with both the heart and the hands." She introduces us to Bill, her brilliant, eccentric lab manager. And she extends the mantle of scientist to each one of her readers, inviting us to join her in observing and protecting our environment. Warm, luminous, compulsively readable, Lab Girl vividly demonstrates the mountains that we can move when love and work come together."

Madison's twin stepkids are moving in with her family and she wants Lillian to be their caretaker…. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other-and stay cool-while also staying out of the way of Madison's buttoned-up politician husband. Couldn't this be the start of the amazing life she'd always hoped for?"

Raised by a distant father and an understanding but overprotective mother, Vivek suffers disorienting blackouts, moments of disconnection between self and surroundings. As adolescence gives way to adulthood, Vivek finds solace in friendships with the warm, boisterous daughters of the Nigerwives, foreign-born women married to Nigerian men. But Vivek's closest bond is with Osita, the worldly, high-spirited cousin whose teasing confidence masks a guarded private life. Through the arc of her own life, on into the great work of our day, she communicates a vision of shared struggle, shared purpose, and shared values. We will be meeting ONLINE!

Books on Tap is BACK... VIRTUALLY!

Grab a drink and a snack, and get cozy on your own couch while we discuss Radium Girls by Kate Moore.

eBooks and eAudioBooks are available in OverDrive!

From the publisher: "The Curies' newly discovered element of radium makes gleaming headlines across the nation as the fresh face of beauty, and wonder drug of the medical community. From body lotion to tonic water, the popular new element shines bright in the otherwise dark years of the First World War. Meanwhile, hundreds of girls toil amidst the glowing dust of the radium-dial factories. The glittering chemical covers their bodies from head to toe; they light up the night like industrious fireflies. With such a coveted job, these 'shining girls' are the luckiest alive - until they begin to fall mysteriously ill. But the factories that once offered golden opportunities are now ignoring all claims of the gruesome side effects, and the women's cries of corruption. And as the fatal poison of the radium takes hold, the brave shining girls find themselves embroiled in one of the biggest scandals of America's early 20th century, and in a groundbreaking battle for workers' rights that will echo for centuries to come."

Living with Black Bears
in New York State

An Online Presentation by Dr. Paul D. Curtis

Tuesday, March 23, 2021, 6 - 7 pm

During the past decade, bear populations in the southern part of the state have grown, and bears have expanded their range northward.

Bears can now be seen in almost any NYS county, and they are becoming more abundant near suburban communities. Consequently, conflicts between bears and people sometimes occur.

In this free online presentation, you will learn about bear biology, bear behavior, and ways to reduce potential human-bear conflicts.

About the Presenter: "Dr. Paul D. Curtis is a Professor of Wildlife Science in the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment at Cornell University. He received a Ph.D. in Zoology from North Carolina State University in 1990, and a M.S. in Wildlife Biology from Colorado State University in 1981. His research interests include human-wildlife conflicts in suburban, forested, and agricultural landscapes, wildlife fertility control, and resolving community-based wildlife issues. He has supervised research projects dealing with white-tailed deer, black bears, colonial water-birds, urban goose management, and bird damage to fruit crops. His extension programming has included a variety of wildlife-related booklets, videos, and fact sheets. Dr. Curtis is a co-author of the National Wildlife Control Training Program, and a Certified Wildlife Biologist® with The Wildlife Society."

Books on Tap Book Discussion

January 17, 2021, 4 - 5:30 PM

We will be meeting ONLINE!

Books on Tap is BACK... VIRTUALLY!

Grab a drink and a snack, and get cozy on your own couch while we discuss The Nickel Boys by Colson Whitehead.

eBooks and eAudioBooks are available in OverDrive!

From the publisher: "In this Pulitzer Prize-winning, New York Times bestselling follow-up to The Underground Railroad, Colson Whitehead brilliantly dramatizes another strand of American history through the story of two boys unjustly sentenced to a hellish reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida. When Elwood Curtis, a black boy growing up in 1960s Tallahassee, is unfairly sentenced to a juvenile reformatory called the Nickel Academy, he finds himself trapped in a grotesque chamber of horrors.... Based on the real story of a reform school that operated for 111 years and warped the lives of thousands of children, The Nickel Boys is a devastating, driven narrative that showcases a great American novelist writing at the height of his powers and 'should further cement Whitehead as one of his generation's best' (Entertainment Weekly)."

Books on Tap Book Discussion

December 20, 2020, 4 - 5:30 PM

We will be meeting ONLINE!

Books on Tap is BACK... VIRTUALLY!

Grab a drink and a snack, and get cozy on your own couch while we discuss We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter.

eBooks and eAudioBooks are available in OverDrive!

From the publisher: "It is the spring of 1939 and three generations of the Kurc family are doing their best to live normal lives, even as the shadow of war grows closer. The talk around the family Seder table is of new babies and budding romance, not of the increasing hardships threatening Jews in their hometown of Radom, Poland.... Driven by an unwavering will to survive and by the fear that they may never see one another again, the Kurcs must rely on hope, ingenuity, and inner strength to persevere. An extraordinary, propulsive novel, We Were the Lucky Ones demonstrates how, in the face of the twentieth century's darkest moment, the human spirit can endure and even thrive."

Books on Tap is BACK... VIRTUALLY!

Grab a drink and a snack, and get cozy on your own couch while we discuss Ask Again, Yes by Mary Beth Keane.

From the publisher: "Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope, rookie NYPD cops, are neighbors in the suburbs. What happens behind closed doors in both houses-the loneliness of Francis's wife, Lena, and the instability of Brian's wife, Anne, sets the stage for the explosive events to come. In Mary Beth Keane's extraordinary novel, a lifelong friendship and love blossoms between Kate Gleeson and Peter Stanhope, born six months apart. One shocking night their loyalties are divided, and their bond will be tested again and again over the next thirty years. Yuval Noah Harari's 21 Lessons for the 21st Century is a probing and visionary investigation into today's most urgent issues as we move into the uncharted territory of the future. As technology advances faster than our understanding of it, hacking becomes a tactic of war, and the world feels more polarized than ever, Harari addresses the challenge of navigating life in the face of constant and disorienting change and raises the important questions we need to ask ourselves in order to survive."

We're meeting @ Clemson Bros Brewery!
22 Cottage St., Middletown, NY 10940

This month, we're reading Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty.

About the book: "Could ten days at a health resort really change you forever? In Liane Moriarty's latest page-turner, nine perfect strangers are about to find out. Nine people gather at a remote health resort. Some are here to lose weight, some are here to get a reboot on life, some are here for reasons they can't even admit to themselves. Amidst all of the luxury and pampering, the mindfulness and meditation, they know these ten days might involve some real work. But none of them could imagine just how challenging the next ten days are going to be. Combining all of the hallmarks that have made her writing a go-to for anyone looking for wickedly smart, page-turning fiction that will make you laugh and gasp, Liane Moriarty's Nine Perfect Strangers once again shows why she is a master of her craft."

Our Popular & Entertaining Monthly Book Discussion

January 28, 2020, 3 PM

in our 2nd floor Community Room at Thrall

At our next talk, we will discuss The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg:

About the book (from the publisher's description): "In The Power of Habit, award-winning New York Times business reporter Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. With penetrating intelligence and an ability to distill vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives, Duhigg brings to life a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential for transformation. Along the way we learn why some people and companies struggle to change, despite years of trying, while others seem to remake themselves overnight. We visit laboratories where neuroscientists explore how habits work and where, exactly, they reside in our brains. We discover how the right habits were crucial to the success of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, and civil-rights hero Martin Luther King, Jr. We go inside Procter & Gamble, Target superstores, Rick Warren's Saddleback Church, NFL locker rooms, and the nation's largest hospitals and see how implementing so-called keystone habits can earn billions and mean the difference between failure and success, life and death."

Our Traveling Book Discussion for Adults

January 26, 2020, 1 - 3 PM

We're meeting @ J's Place 39 West Main St., Middletown, NY

We took a break for the holidays but we're ready to get underway in 2020! This month's book is Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi.

About the book: "Ghana, eighteenth century: two half-sisters are born into different villages, each unaware of the other. One will marry an Englishman and lead a life of comfort in the palatial rooms of the Cape Coast Castle. The other will be captured in a raid on her village, imprisoned in the very same castle, and sold into slavery. Homegoing follows the parallel paths of these sisters and their descendants through eight generations: from the Gold Coast to the plantations of Mississippi, from the American Civil War to Jazz Age Harlem. Yaa Gyasi's extraordinary novel illuminates slavery's troubled legacy both for those who were taken and those who stayed - and shows how the memory of captivity has been inscribed on the soul of our nation."
