Easter is the most important holiday on the Christian calendar and has been observed from the earliest days of the church.

You ask where did the word Easter come from?

According to the 2021 edition of The Old Farmer's Almanac, it's unclear on the origin of the word Easter.

The word Easter may have come from the Anglo-Saxon dawn goddess Eostre, whose feasts were celebrated each spring at about this time.

To learn more about Easter check out the The Old Farmer's Almanac or the many other resources/books we have on Easter.

Did You Know?

Saint Patrick

According to The Old Farmer's Almanac 2021 edition, there really was a Saint Patrick!

St. Patrick was born in Britain as Maewyn Succat. As a young teen Maewyn was kidnapped from his home on the west coast and taken to Ireland to become a slave who worked as a shepherd.

After six long years as a slave Maewyn escaped. Upon returning home, Maewyn received his call (in a dream) to preach the gospel.

Maewyn spent the next 15 years or so in a Monastery ( a place where Monks live under religious vows) preparing for his missionary work. When Maewyn became a priest his name was changed to Patricius and, eventually to Patrick.

Saint Patrick is credited to have spread Christianity throughout the land and put into existence an organized church.

Shamrock

Do you know why we wear the shamrock on St. Patrick's Day?

Legend says St. Patrick used its three leaves to explain the Holy Trinity [The Trinity is the Father, the Son, and the Spirit as three divine persons who are one divine being (God).]

However, there is no record that Saint Patrick actually used the shamrock as a teaching tool.

Fun,Fact, & Folklore

Did you know blue was the originally associated with St. Patrick's Day.

St. Patrick's Day is the traditional day for planting peas.

Today cabbage seeds are planted and old time farmers believed to make the cabbage seeds grow you have to plant the seeds wearing your pajamas.

Did you know what you know now about Saint Patrick and St. Patrick's Day?

DST

What is (DST) Daylight Saving Time?

DST is the practice of changing clocks forward one hour from Standard time during the summer months. The idea behind DST is it allows as to make better use of natural daylight.

According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, Daylight Saving Time began around 1792.

So, what's the short history on Daylight Saving Time?

Benjamin Franklin is often credited with having come up with the idea of Daylight Saving Time as a joke in 1784.

George Hudson came up with the concept in 1885 but was ridiculed for the idea.

In 1907, William Willett proposed a system in a pamphlet "The Waste of Daylight."

The Germans were the first to officially adopt the light-extending system in 1915 as a fuel saving measure in World War I.

The United States Congress passed in 1918 the Standard Time Act which created our time zones and the United States adopted the light-extending system.

There is much more to learn about DST!

Board Books are ideal for young children because the pages don't easily tear or rip.

Gameinformer

(periodical)

Reviewed by Betsy:

"Gameinformer is a peridical in the YA section of the library. It has an editor's column, articles index page, game index, reviews, a quiz page, and of course advertisements.

There is also a readers section for all those burning questions that need answers NOW!! It also has a "best comment," a question of the month, as well as comments sent in by readers.

They even have a gallery where you can submit your own artwork.

The color pictures of the games complete with nightmare causing monsters, and edgy people always with a weapon in hand, gives you an idea of how intense these game can get!

I am not a gamer, but I suspect that this periodical is excellent for those who really are into it, and who want to stay on top of things.

Here you'll pick up the latest news, games, and opinions. If I were a gamer I'd be checking this out for sure!! (Possible wanna be gamer, Betsy)"

The Unofficial Guide to Mining in Minecraft:
STEM Projects in Minecraft

by Eric J. Tower.

Reviewed by Betsy:

"The first thing I noticed is that each section talks about different aspects of mining, and then goes into how to do it in Minecraft. They also show how things will look in Minecraft form.

There is a section at the bottom of each page called Minecraft Mania.which gives hints as to what to look for, better ways to play and plan, as well as warnings.

Designs are shown on the right hand side of each page in MInecraft form. All the pictures are in color, and are very engaging.

I can understand how this can capture the interest of the kids, and maybe some of the adults, it looks fun!!

Included is an index glossary, and websites, and even how to make modifications or "mods" with a program called ScriptCraft. So , on the whole I was much impressed with this book, all I need now is a kid to get me started, maybe my granddaughter!

Our library has a number of books about Minecraft as well as STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) and STEAM (STEM + Arts). Please take a look - you'll be glad you did!"

Which Way is Home

by Maria Kiely

Reviewed by Betsy:

Anna's family has just survived a war with Hitler, only to have the Communists take over their country. If they speak out about their new government, they could end up being taken off to a prison camp.

Home is no longer a good or a safe place to be. Anna's father had been a diplomat for their country, Czechoslovakia, and later a spy in the underground helping the British.

He is now in France, Anna has not seen him in years. It is becoming more and more dangerous to remain in Czechoslovakia.

Anna, her older sister Ruzena, and their mother decide that they must leave, and find their father in France. They find someone to get them out, and make the long journey, traveling by train and later on foot with their guide.

The chapters are short, and I found myself reading page after page, chapter after chapter, caught up in the tense journey they had to make.

It was an exciting read the whole time. They had to trust different people along the way, never knowing if they would be betrayed. I will leave that up to you, the reader to decide.

To me the most interesting and shocking thing is that it is a true story. So when you have finished reading the book make sure to read about the author.

I give this book three stars *** out of four!!!

We're delighted they enjoyed this program at the library, and we congratulate them on their creations!

A FREE performance for the entire family!

No registration required.

A Very Special Story Time

with Children's Author Bryan Collier

Saturday, October 20, 2018, 1 PM

in our Story Time Room at Middletown Thrall Library

About the Presenter: "Bryan Collier grew up in Pocomoke, Maryland, on the lower Eastern Shore of the state, the youngest of six children. His interest in art started early. 'At home and at school, I was encouraged to read. I remember the first books with pictures that I read by myself were The Snow Day by Ezra Jack Keats and Harold and the Purple Crayon by Crockett Johnson. I liked the stories, but I really liked the pictures.' As a teenager he began to paint the world around him - the bay, ducks, water, and marshland. His interest in art was always encouraged both at home and at school. He began to develop a unique style of painting that incorporated both watercolors and collage. 'Collage is more than just an art style. Collage is all about bringing different elements together. Once you form a sensibility about connection, how different elements relate to each other, you deepen your understanding of yourself and others.' In 1985 Bryan won first place in a Congressional Competition, and his art was displayed in the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. Later that year he was awarded a scholarship to Pratt Institute in New York City through their national talent competition. In 1989 Bryan graduated with honors from Pratt Institute with a bachelor of fine arts degree. While attending school in New York, Bryan began to volunteer at the Harlem Horizon Studio and Harlem Hospital Center with a program that provides working space and materials for self-taught artists in the community. He went on to become the Program Director, a position he held for 12 years. Bryan still works with the program in Harlem as a volunteer, feeling a deep sense of responsibility to be a positive role model for kids. 'It gives the community, the schools, the kids, and the parents the opportunity to come together for a very positive uplifting cause - the building and re-building of self-esteem, teaching the appreciation of art, and keeping the kids connected and involved and away from negative influences.' Meanwhile, he made the decision to focus his time and attention on illustrating children's books full time. It wasn't easy getting his art published in books; Bryan tried for seven years before he got his break with the publication of his book, Uptown. Today Bryan spends his time working on his book illustrations, creating his own studio pieces, and going into classrooms to talk with teachers, librarians, and students about books and art. 'I get so much from those school visits. With the books I've been doing, I have this amazing opportunity to bring my art and the process of making artwork and books into the classroom. I ask the students to talk to me and talk to each other about how they feel and what their own experiences are. Basically I ask them to tell their own story. Then I ask them to tell their own story through art'."
