Books on Tap

Thursday, December 21, 2023, 5 PM

at Alondro's Cuisine

Please join us as we discuss...

The Measure by Nikki Erlick.

Publisher's Description: "It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live. From suburban doorsteps to desert tents, every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise? As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: do they wish to know how long they'll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?"

Copies of the book (regular, large print, audio) will be available at the Circulation Desk, and eBook / eAudiobook versions are available through Libby.

This event is FREE and open to adults only (ages 21+).

REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

Books on Tap

Thursday, Nov. 30, 2023, 5 PM

at J's Place

Please join us as we discuss...

There, There by Tommy Orange. Publisher's Description: "Tommy Orange's wondrous and shattering novel follows twelve characters from Native communities: all traveling to the Big Oakland Powwow, all connected to one another in ways they may not yet realize. Among them is Jacquie Red Feather, newly sober and trying to make it back to the family she left behind. Dene Oxendene, pulling his life together after his uncle's death and working at the powwow to honor his memory. Fourteen-year-old Orvil, coming to perform traditional dance for the very first time. Together, this chorus of voices tells of the plight of the urban Native American--grappling with a complex and painful history, with an inheritance of beauty and spirituality, with communion and sacrifice and heroism. Hailed as an instant classic, There There is at once poignant and unflinching, utterly contemporary and truly unforgettable."

How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix. Publisher's Description: "When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn't want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn't want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father's academic career and her mother's lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn't want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world. Most of all, she doesn't want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success. Unfortunately, she'll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it'll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market. But some houses don't want to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them...."

Strange Tale in Stone

Presented by Steve Gale

October 25, 2023, 6 PM

in our 2nd floor Community Room

Some of our most beloved Gothic tales are grounded in stone ruins. Though the love we have for the likes of Dracula and Frankenstein's monster does not cloud the reality that they're fictional, many of these stories have a foundation of real world people and places.

Vlad the Impaler's connection to Dracula is fairly common knowledge, but did you know there is an actual Castle Frankenstein? That Robert Lewis Stevenson's Dr. Jekyll was based on a real person? That a disfigured man really lived beneath the Paris Opera House? That Quasimodo may have been inspired by a 19th century deformed stone cutter?

Free and open to the public. No registration required.

About the Presenter: Steve Gale is a traveler and artist who has been collecting accounts of Europe's ghostly past for over a decade.

July 20, 2023, 5 pm

That's right! We're back! We'll be talking about...

The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff

Books as well as eBooks are available for borrowing through our library.

From the publisher: "In the five years since her husband's disappearance, Geeta has become accustomed to a solitary life; you'd be surprised how difficult it is to make friends when your entire village believes you're a witch who murdered your husband. And since she can't convince anyone that she didn't murder him, she figures she might as well use her fearsome reputation to protect herself as a woman on her own. But when other women in the village decide that they, too, want to be 'self-made' widows and rid themselves of their abusive husbands, Geeta's reputation becomes a double-edged sword--the very thing that's meant to keep her safe is now threatening everything she's built as she unwittingly becomes the go-to consultant for village husband-disposal."

This event is FREE and open to adults (ages 21+).
