AT LEFT: Calbraith Perry Rodgers was the first aviator to cross the United States by airplane, crashing periodically along the way. Middletown has the distinction of being the first city in which he crashed. Taking off from Long Island on September 17, 1911, he landed without incident at Middletown al 6:18 pm. The next morning when he took off, the plane brushed some trecs and crashed into a chicken coop behind a house on Sterling Street. Mr. Rodgers was not seriously injured and took off again several days later when his plans had been repaired. On December 10, 1911, he finally made the Pacific Ocean. Photo by Charles A. Ketcham.

AT RIGHT: Orange County Fair in 1913. The Fair was established in 1843. first coming to Middletown in 1852, again in 1860, and in 1882-1884. It settled here permanently in 1897.
AT LEFT: Midway Park in a c1906 postcard, Built by the trolley company along their linc to Goshen, the Park was located along the Wallkill River opposite what is now the Orange County Golf Club. Opened in August, 1894, the park became a favorite place of amusement for the people of Middletown and nearby communities. The park opened for the last time in 1924.
