ORANGE COUNTY FURNACE: Middletown's first important industry began operations in 1842 on Centre Street, then called Foundry Alley, and later Foundry Street. The foundry extended back to North Street and produced stoves, steam engines, railroad supplies, mill machinery, and a variety of other products. It closed in early 1891 and the buildings were torn down by 1892. The photo above shows a portion of the foundry, and below is a view of the machine shop (photos by Edwin Jessup, c1887). At left is a spiral staircase made by the company.
