October 25, 1896. A lot on which to build a church was purchased in late 1897 on the corner of East Main and Orchard Streets. After a series of fund-raising projects, construction began and the cornerstone e laid October 15, 1900. Christ Church Universalist was dedicated December 29, 1901. The memorial stained glass windows were done by the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The church was designed by Frank J. Lindsey. In 1961 the name was changed to the Unitarian Universalist Church.
NORTH STREET CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH
With the growth of the 0 & W rail yards in the north end of town, that area of the city grew and developed in the latter part of the 19th century. Establishment of a Congregational Church in the area seemed to be a practical step. Funds were raised and the first service held in the church at 275 North Street was on November 17, 1889. This church became known as North Street Congregational. Plans to enlarge the building were discussed in 1929, but it was decided to build a new church when it was learned the present church site at 157 Linden Avenue was for sale.
Plans for a frame church were set aside for stone due to expected savings using volunteer labor. Stone used to build the church came from a farm in Florida, New York. It is said the stone is found only in Orange County. The new North Congregational Church opened October 4, 1931. The architect was Whitman S. Wick.
The former church on North Street has been used by several groups and is presently the Spanish Pentecostal Church Assemblies of God.
FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST
Christian Scientists first began holding services in Middletown around the turn of the century. Organized 1904, the society held meetings at 148 North Street, and later in the Masonic Temple. In 1912, a house at 12 Orchard Street was purchased and remodeled for use as a church. A request to change from a society to First Church of Christ, Scientist, was approved in 1924.
In 1961, the present Grove Street site was purchased and a church erected. The new church opened June 9, 1963, during Middletown's Diamond Jubilee Celebration, Middletown architect Frank L. Howe designed the church.
