NEW YORK PIANO KEY MFG. CO.: In 1853, Wilcox & Draper erected a hat factory on Railroad Avenue at the corner of Grove Street. This wooden structure was eventually replaced by a brick building shown above. After housing several other businesses, the building was purchased in 1901 by Hagen & Ruefer as the New York Piano Key Manufacturing Co. On April 26, 1911, the building was destroyed by fire. At left, is a photo of the fire taken by Charles A. Keadasin. Tie photo below was taken the day after the fire. At this time, the area is a parking lot for the bowling alley.
