FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH (Mulberry Street): This church opened in May, 1844, and is shown in a c1907 postcard at left. (A. H. Still photo). The photo above taken in 1979 shows the church and an addition made in 1958. (Peter Laskaris photo).
ST. PAUL'S UNITED METHODIST CHURCH (West Main S1.): Land for the First Methodist Episcopal Church was purchased in 1838 on South St. (where Southwinds Home is) and a church erected. When this was outgrown, the present site was purchased and the cornerstone laid July 3, 1870. The church was dedicated November 1. 1871. Samuel H. Wilcox was the architect. As originally built, the church had a 168 foot spire. This blew down during a wind storm July 21, 1878. No one was injured. An addition was completed in 1923.
